バージニアウルフ

新潮選書「英語の読み方、味わい方」(上田勤　行方昭夫）の文例34にバージニアウルフの英文（A Room of One's Own)が採り上げられています。上田氏が「頭のいい才気縦横といった文章を書く」と紹介していますが、実際に読んでみて、使われている語彙や、比喩を用いた巧みな表現などから、その評価に誤りはないように感じます。

文章は、ウルフが川の土手に腰を下ろして、依頼された講演の演題「女性と小説」に関して考えあぐねている場面が綴られています。

"Thought-call it by a prouder name than it deserved-had let its line down into the stream. It swayed, minute after minute, hither and thither among the reflections and the weeds, letting the water lift it and sink it, until-you know the little tug-the sudden conglomeration of an idea at the end of one's line:and then the cautious hauling of it in, and the careful laying of it out. Alas, laid on the grass how small, how insignificant this thought of mine looked; the sort of fish that a good fisherman puts back into the water so that it may grow fatter and be one day worth cooking and eating. "

読みのヒントはこんな感じ？？

思索（Thought)が流れに糸を垂らす（let its line... the stream).⇒ その糸は水の流れのなすままに⇒突如、思想の塊（conglomeration of an idea)がくいつく⇒塊を置いてみると

⇒なんと小さく、価値のない思想か（how small, how insignificant this thought of mine)

⇒☆一流の釣り師ならば、もういちど水の中にもどして、将来もっと美味しくたべられるように肥えさせるような魚のようなもの

☆ここの比喩はユーモアがあり、上手いですよね。

Excursion into the literature of a foreign country much resemble our travel abroad～. 外国文学の園を逍遙することは外国旅行によく似ている。

余談ですが、逍遙！なんて訳をあてるとは。。。

英文、内容共に、私には難解ですが、何度でも読む価値のある文章だと思っています。
